  • What is Charter Communications DVR?

Charter Communications DVR (Digital Video Recording) is the latest in digital TV receivers that allow you to store TV programming on a hard disk, enabling you to store shows easily and access this programming at any time. The Charter DVR acts like a high tech VCR, except that there is no videotape. It totally records in digital format, and offers more sophisticated recording options and playback features like the ability to:

Pause any show at any time, and then resume watching when you want.
Record multiple hours of TV without a VCR.
DVR with Moxi - Up to 42 hours of standard definition or up to 12 hours in HD
8000 SA - Up to 45 hours of standard definition
8000HD SA - Up to 77 hours of standard definition or up to 16 hours of HD

Need to see or hear it again? Use the instant replay button to jump back approximately 8 seconds, or the rewind feature during any live show. Easily record shows by title or genre across multiple channels and time slots. Set it once and automatically record every episode for the entire season. Watch your favorite show and record another, or record two shows and playback a third recorded show at the same time. that's TV on your terms - Charter Communications Bundle.

What is the difference between Charter Communications DVR and a VCR?
A VCR uses VHS or Beta tape to store recorded information in an analog format. Charter Communications DVR stores television content in a compressed digital format onto a hard drive in your receiver, saving your shelf space for things other than an additional equipment or tapes.

A VHS tape, with approximately 6 hours of record time, is considerably less than Charter. Charter Communications Bundle DVR has up to 77 hours of digital recording capability.  [ DVR allows more sophisticated recording options like one-time setup to record an entire season of your favorite show or instant replay of live TV.  Can't get rid of the old VHS? Just transfer shows you want from Charter DVR to your VHS tape if you want (VHS tapes store programming in analog format, not digital like Charter DVR).

Will I need to purchase any special equipment to use the Charter DVR product?
No purchase is necessary! Charter Communications Com will provide you with a Charter DVR receiver when you sign up for service.

Can I watch one program and tape another?
Yes, but you will need to install an A/B switch to do so. With an A/B switch you will be able to tape a program while watching another.

  • Paul Allen sells 2 Portland radio stations

A veteran radio executive has entered into an agreement to acquire two Portland radio stations from St. Louis-based Charter Communications' chairman, billionaire Paul Allen.

Larry Wilson, through Endeavor Capital-funded Alpha Broadcasting, will buy KXL, AM 750, and KXTG, 95.5 FM, from Rose City Radio for undisclosed terms. Rose City Radio is owned by Allen, co-founder of Microsoft and owner of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Allen bought the stations in 1998 from long-time owner Les Smith, who owned KXL since 1955. Allen reportedly paid around $42 million.

Wilson founded Citadel Communications Corp., which owned and operated 205 radio stations in 42 cities when he sold it for $2 billion in 2001.

  • DirecTV told to modify Charter Communication com bankruptcy ads

A judge has ordered DirecTV Group Inc. to temporarily stop running its current ads that highlight rival Charter Communications Com Inc.'s bankruptcy filing unless the ads are modified.

U.S. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel in St. Louis, where Charter Communications has its headquarters, made the ruling Wednesday, two days after Charter Communications sued DirecTV for running what it deemed as "false and misleading" ads.

The ads claim that Charter Communications can't provide the latest technology, add high-definition channels or offer new exclusive programming given its Chapter 11 filing in March. But Charter said it can keep up with competition and expects to emerge from bankruptcy quickly.

El Segundo, Calif.-based DirecTV, the nation's largest satellite TV operator, had objected to Charter Communications request for a temporary restraining order, saying in a court filing that its ads truthfully told customers about Charter's Chapter 11 reorganization as being possibly disruptive to subscribers.

DirecTV spokesman Robert Mercer said the judge will let the company continue to run the ads if it modified certain statements about the outcome of Charter Communications Com's bankruptcy.

"We are still able to point to the fact that Charter Communications is in bankruptcy and the outcome is uncertain," he said.

Charter said the ads have been running in print, radio, billboards and direct mailings to consumers in Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.

Charter Communications Com sought bankruptcy protection to reorganize $21.7 billion in debt. It has never made a profit since going public in 1999 after piling up debt due to acquisitions.

  • Charter Communications reported higher revenues and operating income

Charter Communications reported higher revenues and operating income on fewer subscribers for the quarter ending March 31, 2009. Charter Communications posted 1Q09 revenues of $1.66 billion compared to $1.56 billion a year ago. Operating income was $334 million compared to $205 million. Net loss was $205 million for 1Q09 compared to $359 million for 1Q08.

Charter Communications had 5 million basic video subscribers at the end of the quarter, compared to 5.2 million a year ago. Digital video subscriptions within that group were up, however, from 3 million a year ago to more than 3.1 million this year. Broadband subscribers totaled 2.9 million compared to nearly 2.8 million, and telephone subscriptions rose to 12.5 million from 12 million last year.

About 53 percent of Charter’s revenues were derived from video subscribers as opposed to 55 percent last year. Ad sales generated $54 million, a total of 6 percent of revenues.

Charter Communications the nation’s fourth largest cable TV provider, is operating as a debtor-in-possession business under Chapter 11 protection. Charter filed for bankruptcy March 27 with a pre-arranged reorganization plan by which founder and majority shareholder Paul Allen will get a 7 percent equity piece and retain a 35 percent voting share. Holders of common stock, which is currently trading for 3 cents, will be wiped out.

Charter announced this week that the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York had approved the disclosure statement of the plan, allowing the cabler to solicit votes from eligible shareholders. The voting deadline is June 15; a hearing to consider approving the plan is set for July 20.

Charter Communications has $21.7 billion in debt. An agreement negotiated with bondholders to invest $3 billion is expected ultimately to reduce debt by $8 billion. The reduction will cut annual interest payments by around $830 million and boost cash.

  • Charter Cable Internet works fiber optic cables

    Charter Cable Internet

Charter Cable Internet is probably the most common type of broadband internet access now available in the United States. If there is a cable provider who provides cable tv service in your neighborhood, then there’s a good chance you can get high speed internet access from your Charter cable provider.

Charter Cable Internet works over the same fiber optic cables that your cable provider uses to send television to your house. Because the required bandwidth for Cable TV is so large, your cable provider already has the available infrastructure to send your large amounts of data.

Internet Speeds on a Charter cable internet connection can be anywhere from 4 - 8 MBP/s, and unlike a dsl internet connection, the upload and download speed of a cable connection are typically synchronous, meaning that you can download and upload files to the internet at the same speeds.

Probably the biggest downside to getting your high speed internet provided by Charter Cable company is that there is very little to no choice of who carries your upstream. In other words, you’re pretty much stuck with whoever your current cable company is. Generally speaking,  the quality and reliability of high speed internet via cable is pretty good, although it can sometimes change depending on the number of other cable users online and how good your providers internet connection is.

The great thing about getting your internet from your Charter cable company is the ability to bundle different services. Companies like Charter allow you to combine services like Charter Cable TV, Internet and Internet Phone together into one low monthly bill. A great Example of this is the Charter Bundle, which allows you to buy all three services for $99 per month.

  • Finding the Best Charter Communication Cable Modem

Finding the Best Charter Communication Cable Modem

When it comes to selecting a Charter cable modem, there are a great many choices to choose from. The most important feature that a Charter Customer should look for when purchasing a cable modem is reliability. The best way to get information regarding a specific cable modem is by researching it using the Internet. An Internet search will provide you with the technical specs of a given cable modem, such as the speed at which the cable modem is capable of transferring data, the type of warranty associated with the purchase, user/professional reviews, operating system compatibility, etc.

What Exactly is a Charter Communication Cable Modem?

In short, a Charter cable modem is a type of device that allows for the reception of a high speed broadband signal through cable television lines. The coaxial cable used for cable television services has a far greater bandwidth allowance than standard telephone lines providing an extremely fast broadband option at an equitable price.

Charter Cable modems are capable of transferring data at speeds of more than 1.5 Mbps, greatly exceeding the speeds of older, outdated modems such as those used for dial-up and ISDN narrowband Internet connectivity. In order to connect a cable modem to a given computer, you will need to run Ethernet cable from the cable modem to your computer’s network card (Ethernet card). The Charter cable modem must also be connected to its Charter Communication cable backbone network via coaxial cable.
